Sir Richard Dearlove - from Gorran Haven to the head of MI6

It’s an organisation so secret that the government didn’t even acknowledge it existed publicly until 1994.

And even now, the work of MI6 is shrouded in mystery, better known from the James Bond films than on-the-record interviews. So you might be surprised to hear that, between 1999 and 2004, a Cornishman was in charge of the entire organisation.

His name is Sir Richard Dearlove, and he’s agreed to give this station an incredibly rare interview looking back at his time as ‘C’ - the codename still given to the commander of one of the world’s top intelligence agencies - as well as his wider life story.

So here he is, speaking to our presenter Jack Murley about his Cornish roots; his route into the Service; his most memorable moments; the support he received from his wife; and Bond ... James Bond.
