Each year, the global remittance economy sees migrant workers send nearly half a trillion pounds from their work in rich counties to their families back home.

However, this year, the lockdown has put a stranglehold on this important lifeline. The World Bank predicts that remittances could drop by at least 20%, or $100 billion, in 2020, putting increased financial and social strain on fragile nations already struggling to cope with the pandemic.

Scotland is home to a diverse group of around 200,000 foreign workers. The Nine鈥檚 Christopher Bobyn has been looking at how these workers have been coping since lockdown found them suddenly without work and unable to send crucial remittances to their home countries.
