Norway has become the first country in the world to see the sale of electric cars overtake sales of those powered by petrol.

In 2020, 54% of cars sold in the country were powered by electric - a statistic even more impressive because it doesn't include hybrids.

Christina Bu is Secretary General of the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association. She says the change has come about because charging points are now widely available - and because government policies have made buying them economical:

"Electric cars are still more expensive to produce so in most other countries they are a lot more expensive to buy. In Norway, however, they compete because of high taxes on what we do not want: cars that pollute"
