Georgia: ‘We must work harder to find compromises’

Georgia’s political parties need to do much more to work together, the president of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili has said.

“We have now to work even harder to go and find the compromises because that’s the way for Georgia, for the Georgian population and for all political parties,” she told 鶹ҳ Hardtalk’s Stephen Sackur.

The country has been rocked by protests since the parliamentary election last October.

Georgia’s main opposition leader, Nika Melia, was arrested last month in a violent raid on his party’s headquarters.

He is accused of organising mass violence during anti-government protests in 2019. He denies the charges.

Prior to Mr Melia’s arrest, Giorgi Gakharia resigned as prime minister, citing concerns that the arrest would cause “political escalation.”

Mr Gakharia’s replacement, Irakli Garibashvili, went ahead with the arrest, saying Mr Melia would "not manage to hide from justice".
