Classics with NOW: Dvo艡谩k, Symphony No. 9 in E minor 鈥楩rom the New World鈥

One of classical music鈥檚 best loved works, Dvo艡谩k鈥檚 Symphony No. 9 鈥楩rom the New World鈥 was written when the composer was living in New York City and was premiered in Carnegie Hall on December 16, 1893.

The symphony is considered Dvo艡谩k鈥檚 signature work, a late-romantic European symphony influenced by the composer鈥檚 time in the USA 鈥 with the sounds of the 鈥極ld World鈥 and the 鈥楴ew World鈥. There are echoes of the composer鈥檚 鈥楽lavonic Dances鈥 noticeable in the third movement of the symphony, and its cyclic form was a structure popular with European composers. Dvo艡谩k was also inspired by African American spirituals and Native American melodies. However, he did not quote of any specific tunes, saying 鈥淚 tried to write only in the spirit of those national American melodies.鈥 The second theme in the first movement, and the gentle cor anglais melody in the second movement are examples of this.

This performance took place in Aberystwyth Arts Centre in 2019 under the baton of Clemens Schuldt.
