Tigray crisis: Could the Ethiopian conflict escalate into genocide?

The war between Tigray rebel forces and allied government troops from Ethiopia and Eritrea has been marked by massacres and sexual violence. Thousands have been killed and at least 400,000 people are now living in famine conditions according to the United Nations. Ethiopian specialists who have studied this cyclical phenomenon fear for the survival of a multi-ethnic Ethiopia, in what could become a permanent state of ethnic warfare.

Professor Edward Kissi, of the University of South Florida, says that the kind of language being used is an indicator of possible genocide, and that African countries and communities should unite to initiate mediation. He says he recognises certain patterns of language from Rwanda that preceded the genocide in the mid 1990s.
