Voting has been taking place in a collection of US election races that are being watched closely for clues about the themes that could define the pivotal 2022 midterm elections, when Republicans will try to retake control of Congress from the Democratic party who hold a slim majority.

Voters are choosing new governors in Virginia and New Jersey, new congressional representatives in two Ohio districts and new mayors in some of the nation's largest cities. One of the closest contests has been in Virginia - where the Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin has claimed victory. Politico's Steven Shepard in Arlington, Virginia explained what this means for national politics.

鈥淒emocrats鈥� majorities in Congress are extremely in danger a year from now and we could be headed for divided government yet again in 2023 - which is what we had in the final two years of Donald Trump鈥檚 presidency and in six of the eight years of Barack Obama鈥檚 - where one party controls one or both of the chambers of congress and the other party controls the White House.鈥�
