Platinum Jubilee - the Queen marks 70 years on the throne

Prince Charles welcomed his mother's wish that Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, be known as Queen Consort when he becomes King.

Seventy years ago, King George VI died at Sandringham. His daughter, Princess Elizabeth, who was at Treetops in Kenya at the time, ascended to the throne at the age of 25. Now, Queen Elizabeth II becomes the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. A series of celebrations are taking place throughout the year. There will be puddings, parties, parades and pageants. The 95-year-old - marking the occasion at Sandringham - said in a written message to the nation: "I would like to express my thanks to you all for your support. I remain eternally grateful for, and humbled by, the loyalty and affection that you continue to give me." The celebrations are also a reminder of how much the Queen has been a constant figure. A recent study showed that 85% of the population have never known another monarch.
