Ukraine: India's PM tells Russia now is not the time for war

India's PM tells Putin that now is not the time for war - what's behind this message?

In his first public comments on Russia's retreat in eastern Ukraine, the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has said that Ukraine's recent counter offensive won't change his country's plans. He also said the attacks in Ukraine's Donbas region remained on track and that Moscow was not even using all of its military power.

Mr Putin was speaking at a summit in Uzbekistan, where he met the leaders of Asian countries, including China and India. Despite their friendly ties with Moscow, they too have expressed concerns over the invasion. India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who has always adopted a neutral stance in the war in Ukraine, told Mr Putin now is not the time for war.

Weekend spoke to Sushant Singh, Senior Fellow at the Centre for Policy Research in Delhi about India's relationship with Russia and whether Prime Minister Modi's comments had come as a surprise.
