Barbara Chase-Riboud on restitution of African treasures
Western art galleries and museums which refuse to return art works for fear they may be at risk are guilty of a 鈥渃olonial attitude to art鈥�, sculptor Barbara Chase-Riboud has told 麻豆官网首页入口 News.
鈥淎frica has made incredible progress in excavating their own history and celebrating it,鈥� the US artist and writer told the 麻豆官网首页入口 Hardtalk programme鈥檚 Zeinab Badawi.
While 鈥渃ertain works are universal and belong to humanity, not to Africa or to Europe or anybody else,鈥� she said, 鈥渂asically, I鈥檓 for restitution.鈥�
A 2018 French government report found that 90% of African treasures, artefacts and works of art are held outside of the continent.
Barbara Chase-Riboud currently has an exhibition at London鈥檚 Serpentine Galleries.
