German MP: “I see no possibility of talking to Putin”

Marie-Agnes Strack Zimmermann, who chairs the German parliament’s influential Defence Committee said that she could see “no possibility” of talking to Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine.

Asked whether she supports proposals to further limit G7 countries’ trade with Russia she said “Yes. Absolutely. We have to do it… It’s a very simple situation. Vladimir Putin hopes that we are not ready for doing this and we have to do it. Even with the economic question – and it’s a huge one.”

Referring to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s use of the word ‘Zeitenwende’ to describe a historic shift in German foreign policy brought about the Ukraine invasion, Ms Strack-Zimmermann said “You have to realise that this zeitenwende, it’s a real zeitenwende so we have to change our mind and we have to think about with companies, with CEOs - now we have to do something.”

China is Germany’s biggest trading partner.
