Baaba Maal: “We need to raise our voices”

Renowned Senegalese musician Baaba Maal said that world leaders - whether they are political, religious or otherwise – should “listen more to young people, because they are the future and they are the ones who know what kind of future they want”. “And they have instruments like the internet to say what they want to say,” he added.
In May 2022, it Senegalese President Macky Sall stated that his country intended to regulate social media, describing social media abuse as “a real cancer of modern societies”.

Speaking to HARDtalk’s Stephen Sackur, Maal said that people in Africa need to raise their voices and that “getting people connected is a very good thing for Africa and for the rest of the world”.

He also added that governments around the world, especially in Africa are “a little bit afraid to be told what to do and what not to do. But that has to change.”
