Yuval Noah Harari: A.I. is like an ‘alien invasion’
Historian warns the threat from artificial intelligence is ‘already here’
A.I. is like an ‘alien invasion’ that’s ‘already here’, warned Israeli historian Yuval Noah Harari in an interview with the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú. Speaking to the HARDtalk programme, Harari said: ‘This invasion fleet is indeed on the way. But not from another planet but from California and China and the laboratories. They’re already here.’
The author of the bestselling book ‘Sapiens’, acknowledged to Stephen Sackur that there is the possibility A.I. could bring positive things, like ‘cure cancer…solve climate change…create new kinds of music.’ But he was concerned about the extent to which artificial intelligence could control - and in his view already is controlling - much of human civilization. ‘They are taking control of more and more parts of the financial system, the cultural system, of the world’.
Harari said human beings are ‘cocooned by culture’, and ‘shaped by fairy tales and music and art and mythology and political ideologies’ which up until now have always been created by humans. Now A.I. will create ‘more and more of the stories, the music, the images, even the mythologies and ideologies’. This challenges the fundamentals of human society, Harari said. ‘What would it mean to grow up, to be a human in a world, inside an alien culture, which increasingly shapes me and everybody else around me?’
