Former squash world number one Nick Matthew reacts to squash’s inclusion in the LA 2028 Olympic Games.
Squash is one of five new sports along with T20 cricket, flag football, lacrosse and baseball/softball to be added to the 2028 Games after International Olympic Committee members approved their inclusion on Monday.
And Matthew told Sport Today’s Ed Harry about the relief of seeing his sport included in the Games for the first time: “When we got that verification, it was a huge relief. It’s something the world of squash has been working towards for as long as I can remember – 20 to 30 years.
“To finally get that place on the Olympics, the pinnacle of all sporting events is huge.
“Imagine the squash court in front of the Hollywood sign! Under the lights, it could be a fantastic image at LA 2028.â€
The sport's appearance in 2028 will be the sport's first in the Olympic Games. Despite the best efforts of governing bodies, appeals for squash to be part of the Olympics had previously been rejected every four years - while other sports such as skateboarding, climbing and surfing were approved.
