Myttin da! It鈥檚 time now now for An Nowodhow, the news in Cornish, read for you this week by Steve Penhaligon.

As this is the last edition of An Nowodhow in 2023, we are revisiting three important stories which featured in our programmes over the past year.

The first story concerns the attempt in January by Richard Branson鈥檚 company, Virgin Orbit, to carry out the UK鈥檚 first ever satellite launch, using Newquay airport as a base. The company鈥檚 747 successfully launched the rocket carrying the satellite but, unfortunately, due to a technical hitch, the satellite never reached orbit.

The Cornish name for Newquay is 鈥楾ewynblustri鈥�, and here are a couple of Cornish words you don鈥檛 hear very often:

Good morning. In January, the company Virgin Orbit, owned by Sir Richard Branson, attempted to launch its first satellite from Newquay airport.

Virgin Orbit used a Virgin Atlantic 747 adapted to carry a rocket and its satellite.

About 2000 people went to the airport to witness the event and everything began well. The plane flew west over the Atlantic Ocean and, after an hour, the rocket was launched.

But unfortunately, the rocket suffered a technical problem and, consequently, it was unable to reach its orbit. The plane returned to Newquay safely but the rocket and its satellite were lost.

It was hoped that a new attempt might be made later in the year, but in May, Virgin Orbit declared itself bankrupt and the company was wound up.

Our second story is about the Coronation of King Charles III on May 6th this year. Seven girl choristers from Truro Cathedral sang at the Coronation service and street parties were held all over Cornwall. In Bude, a tea-party was held on paddleboards and a wildflower meadow was also planted at Tintagel as a permanent reminder of the event.

In May, Cornwall celebrated the coronation of King Charles III.

Over the coronation weekend lots of street parties were held in towns across Cornwall, and in Truro there was a parade through the town centre hosted by the Lord Lieutenant, followed by a service in the cathedral.

In Bude, a large crowd of people gathered at the Sea Pool for tea on paddleboards, and in Penzance, about 300 people enjoyed listening to choirs and bands in the Morrab Gardens.

Seven girl choristers chosen from Truro Cathedral choir sang at the coronation service itself, and this was the first time that girls have taken part in this way.

And a wildflower meadow was planted near Tintagel Castle as 鈥榓 natural legacy鈥� of the event which will last for many years to come.

And finally this week, we have a story about a new agreement that was signed this year with the aim of strengthening the ties between Cornwall and Wales.

The agreement was signed by the leader of Cornwall Council, Linda Taylor, and the Welsh First Minister, Mark Drakeford.

There will be quarterly meetings between representatives of Cornwall Council and the Welsh government to discuss matters of common concern such as housing, carbon emissions, and their shared culture and language.

Last July, a new agreement was signed which will strengthen the ties between Cornwall and Wales.

Under the terms of this agreement, representatives of the Welsh government and Cornwall Council will meet at least four times a year "to share best practice".

At these meetings the two delegations will discuss matters of importance to both regions, such as housing, carbon emissions, rural economies, culture and language.

The agreement was signed by Cornwall Council leader, Linda Taylor, and First Minister of Wales, Mark Drakeford.

Ms Taylor said that the agreement was "good news for Cornwall and for Wales, and I am delighted we have taken this real step forward".
