In a New Year series, Sport Today picks out the sports men and women who could be writing their names into the headlines in 2024.

US boxer Bruce Carrington is unbeaten in 10 professional fights and is aiming to become the latest world boxing champion to come from the neighbourhood of Brownsville in Brooklyn, New York.

Former world champions Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe, Zab Judah and Danny Jacobs all came from the area where Carrington grew up and witnessed violence as a child.

Boxing helped to give the 26-year-old an outlet after his brother was shot and killed in 2014 at the age of 21.

After missing out on a spot at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Carrington turned professional and he is hoping to be in a position to challenge for a world title in late 2024 or early 2025.
