Esther Ghey: 'It鈥檚 just not feasible as a parent to take a phone off a child permanently'

The mother of murdered teenager Brianna Ghey has spoken to 5 Live Breakfast about the challenges that mobile phones and social media create for children and parents.

鈥淚t was very difficult to manage what Brianna was accessing online."

鈥淪he was addicted to her phone,鈥 she said.

Esther told 5 Live that removing Brianna鈥檚 phone for a short period of time noticeably improved her wellbeing.

But she acknowledges that removing phones completely from children鈥檚 lives is not realistic.

She is calling for social media companies to take more responsibility for children鈥檚 welfare online.

The Online Safety Bill became law in October 2023 and aims to make the internet safer for children.

Esther said the Bill is 鈥渁 step in the right direction鈥 but that it鈥檚 not enough at this moment in time.
