‘I pray that Jim’s moral courage can inspire others’

In 2014, the world was shocked by the murder of American journalist James Foley by members of ISIS.

He had been kidnapped by the group in November 2022 and his murder was broadcast on social media by the so-called Islamic State group.

Two of his captors were arrested, put on trial, and given multiple life sentences in 2022.

James’s mother Diane Foley met one of them.

A book called ‘American Mother’, written by Diane in conjunction with author Colum McCann, tells the story of James – also known as Jim, and his legacy.

James was taken in Syria, and it took nine months before his family even knew he was alive.

Speaking to 5 Live’s Nihal Arthanayake, Diane Foley said: “It was a horrific time, I prayed and did all I could do to advocate and beg my government to intercede.â€
