Do you REALLY know what's in your spices?

Jaega Wise investigates food fraudsters bulking out spices with cheap ingredients.

When stocking up your spice rack you probably don't expect your garlic to be filled with white pepper or your paprika mixed in with brick dust. Unfortunately that might be the reality, thanks to rogue manufacturers (aka 'food fraudsters') making a profit using cheap ingredients to bulk out their product.

Jaega Wise from Radio 4's 'The Food Programme' has been to investigate how widespread the problem really is, and how new technology is helping catch the contaminators in the act.

Radio 4鈥檚 Food Programme approached some of the companies who sold those spices.

First up Amazon, which sold impure Ginger, and Paprika. It said it requires food to be correctly labelled and comply with all applicable laws and regulations. It said it鈥檚 removed the products from sale, is investigating, and the suppliers have been notified.

Another company Gama, which sold contaminated Garlic Powder and Turmeric at a small supermarket, said it bought those items from a trusted, accredited importer. It has raised the issue with that supplier.

And finally Gima UK, which sold cut Oregano from an independent shop, said it has a strong sampling policy in place, and is investigating this in full, as quickly as it can.
