A southern cassowary, one of the world鈥檚 largest and deadliest birds, has been successfully hatched for the first time at a bird park in the Cotswolds.

Keepers at Birdland in Gloucestershire have been trying to breed the giant, flightless birds for more than 25 years.

The cassowary is related to the emu and is considered very dangerous because of its powerful legs, sharp claws and aggressive behaviour.

Head keeper Alistair Keen says the bird has been described as a 鈥渢error turkey鈥� with a 鈥渟ix-inch steak knife on each middle toe鈥�.

But he added: 鈥淥urs are really docile, they arrived as youngsters.鈥�

The park has now agreed to let 5 Live listeners choose a name for the chick.
