Why is there a rise in medical tourism?

Latest figures show that waiting times for hip and knee replacements in England are still far higher than they were before the pandemic, leaving thousands in crippling pain that they are forced to manage day to day. This has led to a rise in medical tourism, with people seeking out the surgery they need elsewhere.

Consumer journalist Rebecca Wilcox meets some of those getting help overseas and finds out about some lesser known NHS Funding that could help others get access these costly procedures.

In response to this film, the Welsh Government said that anyone considering private healthcare, here or abroad, should ensure they deal with someone qualified and reputable. It advises asking about complications and side effects, and perhaps speaking to others who have been treated in that hospital or clinic.

It says the approval for S2 funding is undertaken by each health board and guidance is available online. And it says orthopaedic waiting times on the NHS in Wales are down by 73% since April 2022.
