Bishop: Justin Welby 'in an impossible situation'
The Right Reverend Richard Jackson says the Archbishop of Canterbury, has 'taken responsibility', with his resignation.
Justin Welby's resignation announcement followed a damning report into a prolific child abuser associated with the Church of England.
The Archbishop said the report 'exposed the long-maintained conspiracy of silence about the heinous abuses of John Smyth'. He also said when he was told in 2013 that Smyth had been reported to police, 'I believed wrongly that an appropriate resolution would follow'.
The Bishop of Hereford reflected that the Archbishop was taking responsibility for 'institutional failures', and now wants The Church to be able to focus on being as safe as it can be.
