What are the dangers of an illegally fitted electricity or gas meter?
Zara McDermott investigates the dangers & uncovers those offering to illegally fit them.
As energy prices spiral and more people struggle with household bills, gas and electricity theft is on the rise. There's been an almost 50% rise in meter tampering to avoid paying for energy, and industry bosses have issued warnings about the potentially deadly dangers. Documentary-maker Zara McDermott investigates just how bad it is. In the second part of our investigation, Zara uncovers a group offering to fit illegal meters, allowing customers to steal energy from the grid. We go undercover as a customer, allowing us to confront the 'engineer' - and find out how there are legitimate ways of getting help if people are struggling with bills.
We wrote to Kayleigh 鈥 or Kayles - the leader of 鈥楩ree Energy Nationwide鈥, to offer her a response to the allegations made in this film. She did not respond.
Paul the engineer told us that he strongly contested both the accuracy of the allegations and the appropriateness of the covert recording.聽He told us that he is not linked to 鈥淔ree Energy Nationwide鈥 in any way and that his assertions about his own energy usage are anecdotal and not evidence of wrongdoing.
