Is one big pizza bigger than two small pizzas?

Dr David Cushing from the University of Manchester tells Elliott Webb that because area increases at a faster rate than straight lines, an 18-inch pizza will hold more pizza 'real estate' than two 12-inch pizzas, all things being equal.
The exception to the rule is when you really love your crust, as two 12-inch pizzas will have a larger crust than an 18-inch pizza.
