Mike Foster, the former Worcester MP, introduced a private member's bill following a consultation with people in his constituency. This led to The Hunting Act 2004, which banned fox-hunting.

He tells Elliott Webb how many people didn't realise what he and his family went through at the time, eventually installing a panic alarm inside his house.

In 2005 it became illegal to use dogs to chase and kill foxes, deer, hares and other wild animals. There are exemptions, such as trail hunting, where hounds follow an artificial scent, or using dogs for pest control under strict conditions.

Supporters say it was a vital step for animal welfare, while critics argue it was an attack on rural traditions.
