The legendary motorbikes became used all over the world following the First World War. The factory on Hewell Road had to bring in night shifts to cope with demand.

As Nicola Goodwin reports, motorcycles were used by messengers to supply the front lines with information, whilst others had machine guns placed on to sidecars.

The name Enfield remains in Redditch today, on the trading estate where the factory once stood proud, and as the name of a local pub near the railway station, featuring lots of memorabilia and replica motorbikes adorning the walls.
