Ronnie

Ronnie is one of a group of dolphins studied by scientists on the island of Roatan, Honduras. Together they’re proving how animals can get creative.

Ronnie and the other dolphins at a diving resort in Honduras have been taught signals for leaps, somersaults and other acrobatics. But the trainers here worked with American scientist Stan Kuczaj to develop another special hand signal which has been crucial in revealing an even greater mental potential.

It means ‘create’, and when the dolphins see it they have to dream up their own routine. It could be something they’ve learned or something entirely new, but crucially they have to get creative and dream up something different every time they see it. By seeing how many different actions the dolphins can perform in response to the sign Stan has been able to measure dolphin creativity, something once thought the sole preserve of humans.
