DI Frank Williams

A tough, pudgy-faced detective inspector, Williams was the most senior of the six-man Train Robbery squad.

DI Frank Williams was formerly a sergeant major with an Army Commando unit in Italy, during World War Two and聽later earned himself an outstanding record from working in South London.

Remembering DI Williams

Frank acknowledged in his autobiography 鈥淎mong criminals I had the reputation of being a hard man, but one who would deal fairly with anyone caught.鈥

He聽specialised in running informants and indeed he had received information weeks before the robbery that Reynolds was planning 鈥榮ome crime鈥. However,聽observation on his flat in Putney was difficult and聽made more so by the fact that Reynolds often used a motorcycle on his reconnoitring excursions.

Jack Slipper remembered Frank as 鈥渁 very quiet man who was always deep in thought." He said聽his speciality was "dealing with informants and I don鈥檛 think I鈥檝e ever come across anyone who was better at it.鈥

Frank was partnered by Detective Steve Moore who later said: 鈥淚 rated Frank very highly, he was very well informed.鈥
