How did you start off in gymnastics?
I used to love watching the Power Rangers and desperately wanted to be one. It meant that I needed to be able to do flips like the Rangers did so began flipping myself on the sofa, bed and in the garden. My mum decided that if I wanted to chuck myself about so much I would need to be trained in a safe environment by professionals so she signed me up to my local gymnastics club.
Can you tell us about your career so far?
I joined a general gymnastics class aged nine at school. After a few months my mum was advised to take me to a purpose built gymnastics club where I started my artistic gymnastics training. After three years I moved clubs to continue my training and stayed there until I retired from competitive gymnastics in 2013. During my competitive career I moved across several gymnastics disciplines including Team, Tumbling, and Acrobatics where I managed to gain regional, national and international titles. I was also lucky enough to take part in numerous exciting performances.
What qualities does it take to compete professionally in gymnastics?
You firstly need to be passionate about the sport. From here you can appreciate how difficult the sport is and in turn accept the fact that blood, sweat and tears will become very familiar during the course of your competitive career. You also need to be determined to train to your fullest and constantly push what may seem to be the limits of your ability.
What kind of qualities will you need from your celebrity partner in order to train effectively?
My celebrity would need to be enthusiastic, hard working and willing to have a giggle.
What advice would you give young people interested in taking up the sport?
My advice would be that they try a variety of sports when young and then make a decision with the help of parents and coaches taking into account how talented they are and more importantly how much they enjoy the gymnastics.
Who is your sporting hero?
There are so many to choose from but at the moment it may have to be Usain Bolt as his greatness is completely undisputed.
What do you do in your down time?
I usually chill out and relax with my girlfriend or play Fifa with my boys. Maybe hit the clubs for a couple of drinks and a boogie on the weekends and hit the gym in the mornings before going to work.
What song is guaranteed to get you dancing?
Probably Snoop Dogg ‘Drop It Like It's Hot’ Snooooooppp!
Who would play you in a film of your life?
A younger me could possibly be Jayden Smith and older me… either Jamie Foxx or Denzel Washington?
