The childhood injury that turned me from singing to surgery
Prema Dhanraj survived a serious fire which also damaged her vocal chords, ending her singing dream. She went on to become a leading plastic surgeon treating other burns survivors
Prema Dhanraj wanted to be a singer but as an eight-year-old she suffered terrible burns and almost died. The accident also damaged her vocal chords and she had to give up her singing dream. However her mother had other plans; praying for Prema鈥檚 life she bargained with God to save her, promising that Prema would become a doctor.
Prema fulfilled her mother鈥檚 wishes and much more. She became a pioneering plastic surgeon, studying in the US, training other surgeons around the world and winning numerous awards. On returning to India she set up an organisation, Agni Raksha, in her home town Bengaluru, to offer free medical treatment and social care to burns survivors.
