A Monumental Dream
by Vicky S

Angel of the NorthThis amusing vignette was contributed to the Fantasy Archers topic of .

Hello, is that Mr Gormley? Let me introduce myself, my name is Aldridge, Brian Aldridge. No, we haven't met, but I'd like to say what a great fan I am of your work. I've admired it immensely ever since I discovered it on Google. Now Mr Gormley, I'm a busy man, as I'm sure you are too in your own way, so I'll come straight to the point. I've got a proposition to put to you, I suppose you could call it a commission. Have you got a few minutes to spare? You're not in the middle of sculpting at the moment? Good. Now the situation is this...

...so you can see how important it is to get this right for my peace of mind - I mean to help Ruairi to come to terms with his mother's death.

I've made notes of a few questions to ask you if that's all right. First of all the size of the thing. We've got the space, that's no problem, but obviously Jenny, my wife, wouldn't be happy if it was too intrusive, but on the other hand I don't want Ruairi to think his mother's memory isn't important... so this Angel of the North of yours for example, looks pretty impressive to me, but exactly how tall is it? Really? That tall? Is that in metres or real money?

I see.

Well I think we'd be looking at something slightly smaller to be truthful, and I would of course expect that to be mirrored in the price. Which brings me on to my next question.

Really? That much? Hmmmm. Well, I expect I can run the figures past my farm managers. I'm sure they'll understand, and of course in a way it would be bringing value to the land, they'd certainly appreciate that.

Now I know you're the creative one here Mr Gormley, or can I call you Anthony, but Ruairi, my son, is very interested in entomology. You know, insects and such and I've heard about this Bee of the Bang and I wondered if you'd be able to... you didn't?.... oh I do beg your pardon, I thought it was one of yours. And it's not about bees, is that so? Well why on earth is it called... well, I don't think there's any need to take that tone Mr Gormley, not all of us have had your advantage of time to study art in any depth you know.

Look, I think we both need to think about this project before we go any further. Supposing I give you a call sometime and we meet up for lunch to discuss things face to face. On me of course. Great.

Oh, Mr Gormley, Anthony, just before you go. I don't suppose you've come across a woman called Emin? First name Sharon, or maybe Tracey? Do you by any chance have her number ...?
