SUNDAY

Drove back this pm from brilliant few days at Tim de J's family place in Glos. Really lucky with the weather so we were able to use the pool, play tennis (would have won on a tie break except for badly marked tramlines) and boat on the lake.

Tim's FP absolutely charming woman, perfect hostess. House is outrageous, knocks Liz and Nige's LoLo into the proverbial! Her brother is an MP, really decent sort of chap, he popped over for a few hours on Friday and I had a seriously long chat with him in the library after dinner when he gave me some v. useful pointers about what I need to do in the next few months to pursue my political career. We exchanged numbers and he suggested I come up to see him at Westminster. He said he thought I had exactly the right attitudes and experience to make the grade in government.

India, Tim's little sister, was home from school in Geneva. She has really grown up since I last saw her a couple of years ago in some pony club event. She is turning into a damn fine cook, she whizzed up some amazing profiteroles for lunch. Her French is nearly as good as mine, we had a long conversation about Tati, mostly in French.

Popped into the ancestral pile on my return and informed the biologicals that I think politics is my true calling. FP collapsed in tears and rushed off to phone the Venerable Grandmother and even AP thumped me on the shoulder and offered me a glass of the good scotch he was so overcome. (memo to self, check domestic help has proper immigration status and work permits).

Had my phone switched off while I was away - no bloody reception anyway - and found my inbox crammed with texts and voicemails when I checked. I have to say that a few days in civilised company where people discuss things like adults without bursting into tears because they have run out of green post-its to complete their 'revision programme' really cleared my head and made me re-evaluate the direction my life has taken in the last few months.

Incidentally I am absolutely bloody furious that my largest le creuset pan had been left unwashed in the sink, clearly for several days. Definitely not Si, though he knows a huge amount about food he never actually cooks.

Over the last few days I have come to realise what things are important to me: shared experiences like art and culture, good food and wine, appreciating quality in one's surroundings, maintaining one's possessions in tip top condition, behaving in a civilised manner, good manners. It's either in your genes and upbringing or not I suppose.

I don't understand why, but I feel as though a whole new chapter in my life is about to start.
