Butter Butt

A few weeks ago, Chris Jones posted this in the Home Truths message boards - this week, the producer felt an urgent need to find out more about it...

"The other day when I saw a friend scratching her bottom I said 'Butter will be cheap next year' which was what my mother always said to me when she caught me scratching my bum! This led to a spirited discussion on the subject, so much so I rang my mother who could only tell me that her mother said it to her and that she was helping the old people at the local day care centre (she is getting on herself) and she had heard them use it. We then thought it might be an Anglicisation of a Welsh phrase ( I come from the borders) so I asked a work colleague who can speak Welsh to translate 'Stop scratching your bum'. This doesn't sound anything like 'Butter'll be cheap next year'. However another colleague overheard and joined the debate saying that her mother had also said this to her and they came from the rural area of Jamaica. Now I'm really stuck for an explanation. Any help would be appreciated..."

If you have any idea where this saying comes from - let us know - post a message.
In your circle of family and friends, how do you signal to a person to cease an indelicate or undesirable action?
