Carry on Camping

Home Truths reporter, Philippa Budgeon hears from the girls and the boys who are enjoying a week under canvas in the grounds of Chatsworth - home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire.

"A good night's sleep is 3 hours, everything keeps you awake, everything's very smelly." Philippa finds out for herself how you have to enter a boy's tent with a peg to your nose. Camper Paul Harrison gets 2 hours sleep a night, the smell keeps him and his two fellow campers awake. As well as the experienced, first-timer Alex Ward at 10 years old seems to be generally having a good time apart from the ground being a bit wet and "they get you out of bed really early".

Can you remember the diet at camp? You might think it would be jacket potatoes cooked in foil over the open fire or tomato soup or maybe the tuck shop open for a limited period each day but Paul Harrison seems to be eating a jam sandwich fried in egg, he explains" it is absolutely disgusting but a nearby chip shop will open later". But we find out that's the distinction between males and females camping,as Paul reveals, "the girls have nice meals and the boys have fried sandwiches and things".

However 10 year old Alex Ward is away from his parents for the longest time in his life and seems to be finding it "a bit exciting as well as a bit boring" and he also confesses to "missing his mum sometimes". But accompanying him is Sunshine, his teddy bear which comes as a comfort mostly at night when he is feeling tired. But "he feels brave with all his friends around him".

Romance happens if the teenagers get a chance, but the leaders often stand guard if they hear whisper of a secret rendezvous. But the younger members of the party find it all a bit vile,"I think it's silly, disgusting and gross and I can't understand why people want to kiss at that age." "Yuck!"

Childhood romance, where did yours happen?
Did you recall the first time you went on holiday without your parents?
How old were you when someone first broke your heart?
