My Father's Missing

Metu Mustapha is 25. In 1975, pregnant with Metu, Metu's mother escaped the Moroccon invasion of the part of the Sahara in which she lived. She managed to reach the refugee camps on the Algerian borders, and that has been home for her and her daughter for the past 25 years.

Metu told us about her biggest loss:

"I have never seen my father. Everyday my mother would expect him to arrive, looking across the desert for him, but all she would see was the shimmering heat of the oven where we live. I learn to look for him, but he never came. No-one knows where he is, even if he is alive. It has never been admitted that he was taken, he cannot be found in prison. I suppose in truth I know that he must have been tortured and killed. I鈥檓 25 years old now, and in my head I know that I will probably never see him, but in my heart I still have hope - hope no bigger than a grain a sand, but it is there."

Have you had to deal with the uncertainty of a loved one going missing?
