Kissing Cousins

Helen Webb and Paul Hodge are first cousins - two years ago,
they got married ...

As children, Helen thought her cousin Paul was great,"he was three years older and a bit of an icon." Although they got on well when young their lives drifted apart until Paul, now 51, retired after 30 years in the police service and decided to have "a good do to finish." Family far and wide were invited, and the party was held over an entire weekend. It was a great success, but as Helen recalls, "Paul was so busy videoing everybody that it wasn't until the last moment when we were leaving that I managed to have a word with him, give him a quick hug, and say 'keep in touch - please! And he did."

Paul and Helen decided spend a weekend together which was a great success. Paul recalls that very early on he recognised, "this woman is right for me, she's my cousin, I know her, her family, - the situation is right ..." The family characteristics were important to Helen too,"I do see my grandfather in him and my sister, oddly! It's very reassuring ..."

The relationship grew, and within 6 weeks of Paul proposing to Helen, they were married. There is no legal restriction to prevent cousins marrying and most of the couple's friends and family reacted well to their decision. As Helen's mother said "at least we know him!"

Did you have a 'crush' on one of your relatives when you were young?
Did they ever find out about your feelings for them?
What do feel about them now?
