Grandmother, Teresa Jakeman, is a 63-year-old computer games
addict …

"Midday is the earliest I’ll switch on the computer otherwise I’ll just play games at it all day long…" Teresa sets her boundaries sternly, she knows her will is weak "I've been know to play a new game until 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning … you get so involved in it .. it gets quite exciting!"

The action takes place in Teresa’s bedroom where Teresa adopts her computer persona, "I’m a good guy at heart, I feel uncomfortable playing on the dark side.." Her fascination is with games littered with dwarves, wizards, goblins, good guys, bad guys - "I grew up loving fairy tales .. a book uses your imagination, but with a computer game you’re involved, telling the main characters what to do, what to learn," she says, "The stories aren’t as good as those in books, but they’re more exciting …"

Roles are reversed in the computer world in more ways than one. Joe, Teresa’s grandson says, "Sometimes I really need help with something and she says sorry and just carries on playing… I don’t mind if she plays on it a bit, as long as it's not too much…"

People tell Teresa, "Why don’t you get a life?" She replies, "I’ve had one, now I want to have fun!" At night, she lies in bed, planning her strategy for a newly acquired games, "It’s most unnatural in a grandmother, I know, but there you go!"

In what ways do you step out of the role model you are supposed to follow?
How do close friends or family react to your behaviour?
What made you take up your new interest?
