Crossroads

In Business investigates a world-beating British industry that is facing hot competition from the East. Peter Day goes motor racing.

Noise, speed, mythical hero drivers backed by immaculate teamwork: that’s the spectacle that draws the crowds and the television audiences to Formula One, the pinnacle of motor racing. And this is a sport – and a business — in which British technical expertise still leads the world. But for how much longer?

This autumn Formula 1 heads east for the first Chinese Grand Prix, in Shanghai. It’s a symbol of how the world is changing ... in motor racing as in everything else.

It’s decades since the commercial car industry in Britain faded into near terminal decline. With the help of the experts, Peter Day wonders whether the say thing might happen to British racing cars ... and whether it would matter.
