This week's topics:

Birds and thermals

When birds seek and find thermal lift they seem to rise in a clockwise direction. Is this the case and does it differ in the southern hemisphere?

Gravity

I have never understood how the earth's gravity works. Anything spinning like a turntable throws loose items off. Likewise, objects spun around your head when released fly outwards. But if a bucket with gritty or dusty particles in the water is stirred vigorously then left to settle, all the particles are gathered in the centre of the bucket or whirlpool. Why and how is this? Perhaps the universe is enclosed in a large bucket!

Tides

We know that the moon causes a high tide through the force of gravity. But why does a high tide also occur on the other side of the globe at the same time?

Peat production

Indonesian forest

I read that clear-felling of lowland forests of Sumatra, Indonesia, is taking place to satisfy demands for paper and timber products and make space for palm oil plantations. These forests are home to more than 100 threatened bird species and the World Bank predicts that these forests could be gone completely by 2005.

Swedish heating idea

Is it true that in Sweden they drill into the earth and the heat that comes up can heat their home all winter? Could we use such a system in the UK?
