Richard Jones has kindly included a picture of a head louse and a rather good story of how he came to photograph it.

"Here is a picture of one of my family's headlice. I had to rescue it from near oblivion in a sink full of cold water after the family bonding/screaming session one evening after bath. I put it into a small glass tube with moist tissue and kept it in my trouser pocket all morning until it recovered. I then needed some hair on which to photograph it. Luckily, one of my daughters had had her hair cut the day before and there were some locks still blowing about in the flower bed outside the kitchen door where we had chucked them. I put the louse (one of two I'd saved) onto the hair and it ran up and down surprisingly quickly. It never let go though. It checked every strand from end to end, but never let go."
