PROGRAMME INFO
Thursday 21:00-21:30
Leading Edge brings you the latest news from the world of science. Geoff Watts celebrates discoveries as soon as they're being talked about - on the internet, in coffee rooms and bars; often before they're published in journals. And he gets to grips with not just the science, but with the controversies and conversation that surround it.

Afternoon nap

People who take an afternoon siesta may well be doing what their body clocks are telling them.

Circadian clock
A new study by Steven McKnight suggests that the circadian clock which controls the body's daily rhythms, may have at least two main components - one for light control rhythms and a newly discovered one in our forebrains for sensory controlled rhythms.听

This could explain how mammals are able to adapt to the changing environment.

Artists impressions
To mark the tricentenery of the death of Britain's first professional physicist, Robert Hooke, artists have been trying to develop portraits of this much maligned mystery man from the descriptions that survive.

Language processes
How do our brains process language? A new study by Sophie Scott suggests remarkably differently if your native tongue is Chinese rather than English.听 The observation may have听implications for the treatment of stroke associated language impairment.

Asthma cure?
And听we investigate the mystery causes of asthma and the mechanism of corticosteroid treatments that could pave the way for new drug development without the side effects

Next week
A听new source of pure oil production at high speed from the remains of animals.
