Red Squirrel on Brownsea Island
A Red Squirrel one of the many things to see on Brownsea Island

Lionel Kelleway makes the short trip over to Brownsea Island in Dorset. The island has a rich history and this year marks the centenary of the fist ever scout camp that was held on the island in 1907.

The island is owned by the and much of the island is open to the public for part of the year. The northern part is managed by the and Chris Thain from the trust is Lionels guest and guide.

Lionel soon discovers that Brownsea has a real mix of habitats that includes lakes, reedbeds, woodlands and a saline lagoon all contained on the island. This mix of habitats in turn supports water voles, wood ants, herons, egrets, terns and the ever popular red squirrel which after abit of searching for Lionel finally spots!
