WIÌýCampaign to prevent theÌýimprisonment of the mentally ill
On July 3rd 2004 33 year old Richard died in HMP Manchester. For over a decade he had been suffering from severe mental illness, firstly Schizophrenia which latterly had been rediagnosed as Borderline Personality Disorder. After an incident in October 2003 involving the police and his use of a replica firearm Richard was arrested and put on remand. Subsequently he was sentenced in court to five years imprisonment but six weeks later he suffocated himself to death in his prison cell by putting a plastic bag over his head. AtÌýthe recent inquest into his death the coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death.
His mother, Janice, joins Jenni toÌýtell Richard’s story.Ìý She explains why she believes far too many mentally ill people are currently being imprisonedÌýand why she is using the Women’s Institute as the platform to highlight her concern.
