Simphiwe Dana
The South African afro-jazz singer

The afro-jazz singer Simphiwe Dana has achieved a lot in her 28 years. Raised in a village in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, Dana began singing ceremonial circumcision and wedding songs to herself during solitary walks to fetch water. She later moved to Johannesburg and was discovered whilst performing at an open mike session.

She now has two international albums released and has been nominated for the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Radio 3 World Music Awards in the African category. Ritula discusses Simphiwe’s music, her distinctive homemade fashion and why African culture is so important to her.
