Who's the Queen of Soul? 18 Feb 2008
Soul Queens: Gladys Knight, Beverley Knight, Tina Turner, Beyonce Knowles, Aretha Franklin and Mary J. Blige
Beyonce says it’s Tina Turner, but should Aretha Franklin be stripped of her title?

Aretha Franklin is demanding a little more
R-E-S-P-E-C-T after young pop star Beyoncé Knowles described Tina Turner, not Aretha, as the Queen of Soul at the recent Grammy Awards. Needless to say Aretha did not take kindly to being stripped of her long-held royal title, accusing Beyoncé of taking a 'cheap shot'.

But who truly deserves the title of Queen of Soul? Music writer Lucy O’Brien and soul singer Ruby Turner join Jenni to debate the Aretha-Tina controversy, and discuss which of the current soul princesses will follow in their wake.

'She Bop: The Definitive History of Women in Rock, Pop and Soul' by Lucy O’Brien is published by Continuum International, ISBN: 978-0826457769.
