Dr Arju Deuba 30 September 2008
Dr Arju Deuba
MP and former First Lady of听Nepal

It鈥檚 less than a year since Nepal became a federal republic and its monarchy was abolished. In its first democratic elections a significant number of women were voted in, about a third of all MPs. Dr Arju Deuba is one of them. She鈥檚 a campaigner for women鈥檚 rights who is also married to the former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. She joins Jane on her way back from the UN Summit in New York which she attended on behalf of the White Ribbon Alliance, a coalition aiming to raise awareness of women dying in childbirth. The maternal death rate in Nepal is the highest in South Asia, and she nearly died in childbirth herself. She talks to Jane about her vision for tackling the problem, her work as an MP and the future for women in the new, democratic Nepal.
