History
Women who built warships 20听January 2010
Mary Ross, copyright Rochester Museum
Female shipbuilders of the听19th century

19th century women didn鈥檛 just work in traditional female roles such as millinery and haberdashery. They also managed male businesses, such as those within the expanding shipping industry during the Napoleonic Wars and into the Victorian period. Jenni talks to Dr Helen Doe about the most successful female shipbuilders, such as听Mary Ross of Rochester (pictured). How did they come by their businesses? What did they actually do? And how did their skills and opportunities differ from those of men?

'Enterprising Women and Shipping in the Nineteenth Century' by Dr Helen Doe is听published by Boydell and Brewer, ISBN: 9781843834724
