Turkish elections 2007 18ÌýJul 2007
Women’s equality is one of the central issues in Turkey’s July 22nd elections.

The elections in Turkey are scheduled for this Sunday, and the issue of women and equality is high on the agenda. The ruling AK party are accused by secularist critics of harbouring a covert Islamist agenda which threatens women's rights. But the government has, in recent years, passed laws which uphold the principle of equality for women. And a new class of religious feminist women argue that secular does not always mean equal. The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú’s Turkey Correspondent, Sarah Rainsford, and Nigar Goksel, an analyst at the European Stability Initiative and co-author of a recent report: ‘Sex and power in Turkey: Feminism, Islam and the Maturing of Turkish Democracy’, Ìýjoin Miriam O’Reilly to assess the implications of the vote.
