Carol Birch: Scapegallows 20 Dec 2007
A new novel about Margaret Catchpole; horse thief and midwife.

Margaret Catchpole was an 18th century horse thief, in itself unusual for a woman. She was sentenced to hang and managed to escape from prison disguised as a sailor. She was caught and imprisoned again. Eventually she was transported to Australia where she set herself up as a midwife. To this day there are maternity wards named after her. Her story is the inspiration behind ‘Scapegallows’ the new novel from award winning writer Carol Birch. CarolÌýjoins Jenni in the studio to explain more about the life of this remarkable woman.

'Scapegallows' by Carol Birch is published by Virago Press LtdÌý ISBN-13: 978-1844083909
