Toda Women 3ÌýJan 2008
Village in Tamil Nadu, India
WhatÌýdoes the future hold for this Indian community?

In India, the Toda tribe is one of the country’s smallest communities – numbering just 1,600 people altogether. They live in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, are goddess worshippers, tend the land and believe the buffalo to be sacred. However, the women are not allowed to go near the buffalo or the tribe’s distinctive-looking temple. Instead, their lives have traditionally revolved around housework and embroidery. Today, though, they are increasingly becoming better educated than the men. As a result, more and more Toda women are rejecting this highly patriarchal society and marrying outside the tribe. So what does the future hold for the Todas? Clare Jenkins reports.
